8 Affordable Michelin-Selected Restaurants to Try in Tottori
Michelin Bib Gourmand: Hot Air Tottori may be rural Japan, and Hamamura Onsen may be a rural onsen town within it, but this is where you will find Tottori's only Michelin-recognized ramen shop. Even better, Hot Air began as a used-car dealership. Come for a modern bowl built from local Tottori ingredients, then enjoy the three free onsen footbaths in the area. 小虎食夢網 (Xiao Hu Shi Meng Wang) Read the article Michelin One Star: Jun Jun is only a three-minute walk from Tottori Station, with many hotels nearby. Interestingly, its Tabelog score is just 3.31. A Tottori friend joked that locals are not good at scoring restaurants and tourists who do score rarely come this far. Whether that is pride or self-deprecation, the restaurant itself is quiet and understated, so much so that I was unsure what to expect before entering. 小虎食夢網 (Xiao Hu Shi Meng Wang) Read the article Michelin Bib Gourmand: Ajidokoro Shin Ajidokoro Shin is a well-known local izakaya in Kurayoshi. According to the Tottori friend who brought us, the kitchen focuses on local ingredients, with seafood bought daily at the fish market and dishes rooted in Tottori home cooking. I used to avoid izakaya on trips to Japan, but after enough lessons from Solitary Gourmet, I have come to love them. For travelers who want regional food, they are often the best choice. Michelin Plate: Daisen Kurogyu Kyoshotei Daisen Kurogyu Kyoshotei appeared as a Michelin Plate selection in the 2019 Kyoto-Osaka Michelin Guide's Tottori supplement. It was the only yakiniku restaurant included. The shop specializes in Daisen Black Beef, a cattle tradition said to stretch back a thousand years, and it is also one of Tottori's highest-rated yakiniku restaurants on Tabelog. It makes an easy stop after visiting Sakaiminato and the world of Kitaro. Michelin Plate: Ajidokoro Misa Ajidokoro Misa in Sakaiminato has been open for a little over a decade, yet it has the atmosphere of a much older restaurant. A Tottori friend explained that its crab dishes are so affordable because the owner heads the local red snow crab association and operates close to the fishing port. The restaurant also runs lodging, and both overnight guests and meal-only visitors can enjoy fresh, well-priced crab cuisine. Michelin One Star: Kikyo Shusai Kikyo is one of Yonago's two Michelin one-star restaurants, located near JR Fujimicho Station. The other, Hakushu Suzunoki, is also nearby. What stands out is that dinner at this modern izakaya can be just 7,700円 (JPY), service included, making it a remarkable value for a starred meal. Michelin Bib Gourmand: Mitakien Across more than 100 trips to Japan, Mitakien remains one of my favorite restaurants. Set beside a stream in Tottori's countryside, it feels like a forest retreat. It is hard to believe that more than 50 years ago, the owner, who studied English at university, shaped the landscape by hand tree by tree and plant by plant. The setting is beautiful, the lunch is abundant, and the price can be around 4,000円 (JPY). Michelin One Star: Akiyama Akiyama is tucked into a quiet residential area in a renovated Japanese house with front and rear gardens. It is about 15 minutes by car from Kurayoshi Station and about two minutes on foot from the circular museum. The restaurant has only five counter seats and two private rooms for six guests each. It is run by a husband-and-wife team: he cooks, while she serves and explains the dishes. The cuisine is omakase Japanese kaiseki. 齊哥的食旅探go (Qi Ge de Shi Lü Tan Go)
